Stefan De Hert | Chairperson Scientific Committee
The first ESA Focus Meeting was held in Athens, Greece on 14-15 November 2014. The excellent programme was put together by the ESA Scientific Subcommittee on Paediatric Anaesthesiology, in cooperation with the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology (ESPA), the European Society of Paediatric Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) and the Hellenic Society of Anaesthesiology (HAS). Delegates benefitted from an update on current state-of-the-art practices in paediatric anaesthesia monitoring, the brain, the lungs, the use of inotropes and vasopressors, pain management, regional anaesthesia and sedation outside of the operating room. The problem-based learning discussions provided a forum for delegates to participate in scientific exchanges with their peers and key opinion leaders. The hands-on workshops on ultrasound-guided venous access and resuscitation in neonates offered participants the possibility to practice skills and learn new techniques.
For the first time we asked the attendees to use an online tool to evaluate the Focus Meeting. More than 50% of the attendees filled the online evaluation form in; among them 84% heard about the event from ESA communication tools: the website, the e-newsletter or the social media pages.
The overall feedback on the event was very good and the format, relevance of the topics and the quality of speakers and presentations were positively received by participants.
Workshops and problem-based learning discussion sessions were well attended and very positively evaluated. We asked the attendees to rate all the symposia organised. The feedback was very positive: if we consider all together the positive answers (good, very good and excellent), the average evaluation for the symposia is 93%. Moreover, if we take account of the best options “very good” and “excellent” only, the evaluation is absolutely positive (65%).
The atmosphere during the Focus Meeting was excellent, with stimulating interactions and active exchanges between delegates and speakers.
For about 90% of the respondents autumn is the best time for the ESA Focus meeting, so we are pleased to invite you to the next year’s ESA Focus Meeting on Perioperative Medicine: the Cardiac Patient, which will be held in Nice, France, 13-14 November 2015.
We are looking forward to meeting you in France!
